As competency-based education expands across the health professions the methods we use in the classroom also expand in order to promote active learning both inside and outside of the classroom. While we develop new learner skills through a competency-based approach we must also develop new faculty skills to meet the expanding needs for our students to attain competence. Both small group and large classroom teaching must adapt and expand how we teach and how we engage with learners.
In this 8-week faculty development series, we will explore various teaching techniques and facilitator skills that can be used in the classrooms, laboratories, simulations, and in clinical practice sites. The series will progress through 8 sessions. Each session will last 1 hour and is broken down into a theory burst about a specific teaching technique or facilitator skill, followed by a practice period. The session will end with a debrief along with making specific plans to use the technique/skill with learners. Sessions will occur every other Friday over the course of a semester. While there is a progression in the skills focused upon faculty are welcome to sign up and participate in any of the sessions. The series will run the length of the Fall semester and will be repeated again in the Spring semester.
The first session is scheduled for Friday, August 13, from 3-4 PM via Zoom. Subsequent sessions are scheduled for the same time every other Friday. Faculty across both campuses and clinical sites are welcome to attend.
